WHAT DOES RANDOM-NUMBER MEAN?

There's a philosophical concern about what precisely "random" is, but its defining attribute is surely unpredictability. We can't speak about the unpredictability of an individual variety, due to the fact that selection is exactly what it is actually, but we can talk about the unpredictability of a series of quantities (number sequence).
